West Stow / Lackford 24th February 2002

A fine day which, unfortunately, turned to persistent rain by the afternoon. West Stow once again proved that, although seemingly under-reported, it can produce some fine birds. (even though your Web Author missed the two Crossbills yet again!)

West Stow Country Park off the A1101 just outside Bury St. Edmunds, contains seven Anglo-Saxon buildings which have been reconstructed on the site where they were excavated, the settlement dates from 420 - 650 A.D. and all the buildings can be explored. In the centre you will see fascinating displays of some of the objects found during the excavation of the village, plus an exhibition of Replica Anglo-Saxon costume. Every aspect of life is covered, from fashion to farming, crafts to cremation! Early Anglo-Saxon material from West Stow, Icklingham, Westgarth Gardens and Eriswell is displayed.

With it's view over the reconstructed village and the Country Park bird feeding area, the Angles cafeteria is a wonderful place to watch the many birds in comfort.

The Country Park
Woodland, heathland, a river and a lake all form part of this beautiful park, which includes a site of special scientific interest. There are two bird hides, a nature trail and lots of other walks in the park or across the road in Thetford Forest.
