Leigh on Sea 08.00
Hoopoe reported in garden at Undercliff Gardens. The bird was pecking into the grass like a woodpecker for 3-4 minutes then flew towards the railway line (which our garden overlooks) following the path of the railway towards Gipsy Bridge. We were both amazed by how majestic it looked. The Hoopoes markings on it's back and crest were incredible. As it bent over pecking it's crest looked like an extension of it's beak. 15 Oystercatcher (at least 5 pairs), 2 Black-tailed Godwit, 8 Bar-tailed Godwit flew over plus flock of 11 Whimbrel dropping on to Roach side salt marsh, 4 Ringed Plover, 2 Brent Goose still hanging around, 3 Common Tern are first for the year here but didn't show any interest in the new shingle capped islands. Well into double figures on Yellow Wagtail, Corn Bunting, singing Reed Bunting and Whitethroat in scattered oilseed rape along sea wall.
