Billericay (East of High Street) 15.00:Goshawk (Mobbed by Sparrowhawk), 1 Coal Tit, 3 Willow Warbler, 1 Green Woodpecker. Russell Clark. The Goshawk drifted east over my nans back garden and was being mobbed by a male Sparrowhawk. I am familiar with both species and have compared the birds at Mayday Farm before. The difference in size was immense and both birds were male by grey colouration and very pale in the sun. The Goshawk drifted over with the occasional heavy wingbeat and was direct in its path. The Sparrowhawk was flapping a lot more and was attacking the Goshawk. It was upset by its presence, and I don't know that it would be attacking a female Sparrowhawk in the same way. The wings were longer and very broad giving the bird a more powerful and bulky appearance. It was quite low to the ground and I was able to see the broad obvious eyestripe, not so conspicuous on Sparrowhawk. The bird had no jessies which discounted an escape.
