Southchurch Park East
The 2 adult Mute Swans and remaining cygnet took off from the bridge, into a NE wind. Mum and cygnet made it down to the estuary, Dad just clipped a telephone line and landed inside the bowling green, he was OK though. I picked the male swan up and took him down to the estuary. The other two were just off the foreshore/beach waiting. They were still in that area at 12:45 and looking fine. Its the first time since both adults arrived late last February that they have made it to the estuary. These two are creatures of habit and in the last two years disappeared for a few days, at this time. If they do the same hopefully they will drop the last cygnet off somewhere. All the same now they are back on the estuary and the cygnet will move on in due course. In the next two weeks, I will cut some reeds from the Southchurch Park East and put them on the island in Southchurch Park as they will start nest building by early/mid March, all being well. It's a credit to all involved that both sets of cygnets, the four from S. East Park and eight from S. Park, all fledged eventually. In our first year, 2005, I saw four cygnets die in five days. How things have changed and it has made the park a better place too although I must admit it is a long job and only a good team makes it possible. One person in particular is Tony Little of Southend Parks. Without him being just a real top guy and pulling strings, the lake environment would be a very different place. He always seems to understand the heartbeat of nature and managing it where need be. Bob Dobinson.
