Bird Reports for January 2000

01/01/00 - A very quiet start to our year 2000 Essex list, an hour spent at Oxenham Farm (Wakering) and an hour at Wakering Stairs produced the following species: Blackbird, Black Headed Gull, Blue Tit, Brent Goose, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Collared Dove, Common Gull, Curlew, Dunnock, Fieldfare, Great Black Backed Gull, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, House Sparrow, Kestrel (male), Lapwing, Magpie, Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail, Redshank, Robin, Skylark, Song Thrush, Sparrowhawk, Starling, Stonechat, Wood Pigeon, Wren. Observers: Graham and James Mee

08/01/00 - Pomarine Skuas have been seen off of Southend Pier.

09/01/00 - (From feedback) Hanningfield Reservoir, a good start to the day with the first bird being a male Bullfinch feeding,the Blue winged Teal was visible from the oak hide. Also seen were: Wren, Wigeon, Teal, Coot, Commorant, Gadwall, Pochard, Song Thrush, Robin, Mallard, Moorhen, Mute Swan, Pintail, Great Black Backed Gull, Canada Goose, Greylag Goose, Green Woodpecker, Jay, Grey Heron, Great Tit, Long Tailed Tit, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, Hawfinch, Collared Dove, Sparrowhawk, Goldcrest, Great Crested Grebe, Pied wagtail, and Pheasant. 09/01/00 - In an outstanding day in the River Lee Country Park (and Rye Marsh RSPB reserve) the following species were observed on the Essex side at Fishers Green around Seventy Acres Lake: Six Long Eared Owls which have been at the same roost on the lake for the last week with, altogether, eleven now being reported. Wonderful views can be had from the footpath. Also seen were Grey Wagtail, Kingfisher, Reed Bunting, Siskin (20+), Smew, and Stonechat. A single Short Eared Owl was observed at Two Tree Island late afternoon.

16/01/00 - 11.45am. The following species were amongst those observed from the Potton Island bridge, Wakering: Male Hen Harrier, Corn Bunting and Red Legged Partridge. A little Grebe was seen on the pond next to Sutton's Boatyard, also at least two Water Rails were heard.

22/01/00 - 11.30. A solitary Iceland Gull observed at Uncle Tom's Cabin, Shoebury. A group of five Velvet Scoter were observed at high tide from the car park at Two Tree Island.

23/01/00 - (from email feedback) Four Long Tailed Tits  in garden in Hullbridge. A Pair of Shelducks, Numerous Oystercatchers and some Black Tailed Godwits on the banks of the River Crouch. Observer: Mick Burgess. Also seen today were 15 Common Scoter from Wakering Stairs

24/01/00 - Pomarine Skuas have again been sighted off of Southend Pier.

24/01/00 - A Puffin has been observed on the Thames at east Tilbury

25/01/00 - (from the webmaster) I seem to be single-handedly keeping the entire population of Collared Doves going in Southend, thirteen were at my bird feeding station in one go! Is this a record? Please let me know.

29/01/00 - Three members of the Southend group visited Rye Marsh RSPB Reserve and Fishers Green. The following species were observed: Blue Tit, Canada Goose, Chaffinch, Coot, Gadwall,  Great Crested Grebe, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Kingfisher x2, Little Grebe, Long-Eared Owl x4, Long Tailed Tit, Mallard, Moorhen, Mute Swan, Pochard, Reed Bunting x6, Robin, Shoveler, Snipe, Tufted Duck, Water Rail.

Up to six Smew, a flock of twenty Siskin, six Water Rail and a Bittern have been in the area over the last few days but were not observed on this trip.
