Just to let you know, that at 12:35 as I was on my way to the park knowing that the five cygnets had now been gone five days and should have moved well away by now. Just as that thought left me, I walked towards the back of Herbie's shop oon Lifstan Way, looked up to the corner and saw two cars around what looked like a Swan. As I rushed toward the scene i received phone call, it was one of Brinsley Manzi's relatives at the scene. They had done a fine and swift move protecting it. It looked like one of our 5 cygnets, as was user friendly but was stressed also. It looked like it came down on the wet road and maybe got spooked by cars so messed up its landing. Had a good look, bit of blood on beak, one cut ankle, small blood on underside of body but couldn't see any obvious breaks. We took it to Medivet for a quick assessment. I Thought we were going to start to lose it for a moment (mild shock) but it passed. The vet checked all limbs and it seemed superficial. So as much as the estuary might have been the option to take it to we have not come this far to take that risk. After a quick discussion it was decided to take it over to Orsett Wildlife Hospital. It was just fine in the car, very lively on arrival at 2.20pm and parping away as they do. I will call OWH in a couple of days and keep you all informed. The first eight days of this year have been nuts, swans, cygnets, park criminal damage/lots of reassurance to a concerned pensioner for her personal safety, some neighbourhood planning stuff and every day too. A Mad 2014 so far. Bob Dobinson.

Southchurch Park East
As anticipated sooner or later, bearing in mind the cygnets are ten weeks late leaving, the two adult Swans started giving two of the cygnets hell and very swiftly too. After rescuing one outside the dry cleaners in Woodgrange Drive and one from the sluice gate pit, I had look at taking them to the estuary for their own safety. I walked out there and the sea was white with horses!. Both were then put in a volunteers car and taken to Hullbridge, nice and calm with lots of Swan company. After having lots of opportunity to leave yesterday in the fine weather, the remaining five just got harassed badly. In particular one cygnet, which was getting exhausted, was causing concern. This morning at 9am all five were on the grass/Rose garden Kensington Road end with the parents not letting them in the water. So bearing in mind a small fine weather window and the tide being out still, it was decided to lift them to the estuary so they could move on before the weather closed in. Ray, Dianne and Peter assisted and all 5 cygnets flying about on the estuary by 10.15am - lets hope they don't journey back. It has been a crazy three days, with constant worried phone calls from the public etc. Job Done. Bob Dobinson.
