Southend, 08:10: 4 Crane (possibles were seen very high and distantly from car on the way to work near the RBS building by Tesco, I never managed to find somewhere to stop and get the binoculars onto them to confirm ID). Steve Arlow (SOG).
Leigh-on-Sea, Tattersall Gardens 09.06: 1 Sparrowhawk, juvenile in low ambush flight from North attempted to catch passerine on bird feeder in my garden but missed. Martin Johnson.
Broomfield, Chelmsford 19:20: Hobby. Neil Chambers (SOG).
Wallasea Island: 1 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Avocet, 1 Barn Owl, pair Oystercatchers possibly nesting on the far haystack! Jeff Delve.

Southend, 13:00 to 13:10: 3 Herring Gull Southend town centre - 2 pairs of Herring Gulls one with 1 unfledged young and one with 2 unfledged young. However, given the number of adult gulls around the town this spring/summer there must be other nests. I have seen gulls carrying nesting material in other parts of the town. John Wright (SOG).
Wallasea Island 16.00 - 16.30: I do not know whether it is of interest to you but I am the skipper of the Lady Essex II (the ferry) working from Essex Marina on Wallasea Island. Today on a seal trip, there were on Foulness sands 6 Turnstone 2 Curlew and 4 Oystercatchers, as well as 18 seals including one young suckling from its mother. I can also tell you that inside the Marinas Eastern arm on the South bank a Little Egret works the first 3 hours of the flood tide every day, and when disturbed flies only short distance before returning to the same spot. Furthermore again on the early flood tide on a daily basis terns (I am not up on my terns yet) can be seen regularly catching fish just a few feet from the mud. Gary Dunn.

Two Tree Island 08.00 - 10.00: 58 Avocet, 4 Oystercatcher, 3 Ringed Plover, 1 Redshank and numerous Black-headed Gull on the lagoon. 150+ Curlew on the marshes. 2 Little Egret off the eastern tip as the tide began to recede. David Lee.

Vange Marsh, 08:00 to 09:00: 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel, 1 Ruff (male in full summer 'ruff'), 6 Green Sandpiper, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 2 Common Tern (pair), 12 Pochard (lncluded a female with 2 young. Plus the 'Lesser Scaup' type hybrid is still present), 6 Tufted Duck, 15 Teal, 2 Oystercatcher (pair). John Wright (SOG).
Wat Tyler Country Park, 09:15 to 11:00: 2 Little Egret, 2 Mediterranean Gull (pair, adult summers), 1 Hobby, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Bearded Tit (juv. seen, others heard), 1 Shelduck. John Wright (SOG).
South Fambridge / Brandy Hole 09.35 - 11.55: 3 Little Egret, 2 Turtle Dove, 9 Common Whitethroat, 2 Curlew, 5 Goldfinch, 6 Sedge Warbler, 2 Reed Bunting, 6 Shelduck, 2 Corn Bunting, 9 Swift, Green Woodpecker, 17 Skylark, singing / displaying, 10 of which took off, and ascended together, I think there were young amongst them. Wakering Stairs, 15:55 to 17:00: 1 Dark-bellied Brent Goose, 6 Greenshank, 1 Turtle Dove, 1 Little Egret, 1 Mediterranean Gull (adult flew in from the north over Havengore Island). Steve Arlow (SOG).
Fairlop Waters, LB Redbridge 16.00: 1 Little Egret. I am aware from your web site that these are seen around Southend but thought you might be interested in a sighting so far inland. Steve Hancock.
Shoebury East Beach, 17:10 to 17:25: 7 Mediterranean Gull (6 1st summers and 1 adult (brings the total seen today to 56 birds including the two adults at Wat Tyler)). Steve Arlow (SOG).

Hanningfield Reservoir 16.45 - 17.30: Hirundine spectacular! Hundreds of House Martins, Sand Martins, Swifts and to a lesser extent Swallows across the entire reservoir feeding on the aphids that have recently been a nuisance around the perimeters. 4 Common Tern and one Hobby tried its luck. Woodside Park, Thundersley, 17:00 to 17:40: 1 Common Tern (An amazing sight of a Common Tern fishing for ten minutes & catching a small Roach from the small fishing lake/large pond at Woodside. South Fambridge / Brandy Hole 09.55 - 12.05: 2 Sedge Warbler, 2 Reed Bunting, 17 Shelduck, 6 of these were chicks, 4 Little Egret (1 on north side of Crouch), 2 Turtle Dove, 13 Swift, 2 Yellow Wagtail, 2 Curlew, 3 Common Whitethroat, 3 Corn Bunting, 2 Mute Swan juveniles, 10 Greylag Goose, Common Tern, 9 Skylark singing and displaying. Southend Seafront, 10:00 to 11:00: 14 Mediterranean Gull (6 adults, 4 1st summers and 4 2nd summers. at least half were present off the Sealife Centre), 1 Dark-bellied Brent Goose (out from Rossi's), 3 Little Egret. Steve Arlow (SOG).
Shoebury East Beach, 11:30 to 12:10: 5 Mediterranean Gull (3 1st summers and 1 2nd summer), 5 Little Egret, 257 Common Gull (minimum), 1 Dark-bellied Brent Goose (presumably the bird from Westcliff). Steve Arlow (SOG).
Canvey Seafront, 12:45 to 12:50: 2 Mediterranean Gull (adults). Steve Arlow (SOG).
Chalkwell Park, 14:00 to 14:30: 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker. John Wright (SOG).
Two Tree Island Lagoon 14.00 - 15.00: The lagoon is now completely dry apart from the ditch running round the edge (even at high tide). 30 Avocet roosting together - none are nesting. 40 Black -headed Gull, 6 Redshank, 10 Lapwing, 8 Oystercatcher, 6 Ringed Plover (1 pair were seen mating). Rochford Golf Course, 14:45 to 18:15: 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Common Tern, 1 Blackcap (singing), 1 Chiffchaff (singing). Neil Chambers (SOG).

Westcliff Seafront, 11:15 to 11:30: 7 Mediterranean Gull (all 1st summers included 2 new birds, one with green ring on left leg 3KN9. It was missing its right foot). Steve Arlow (SOG).
Southend Seafront, 16:20 to 18:15: 42 Mediterranean Gull (16 adults (4at East Beach), 23 1st summers (10 at East Beach) and 3 2nd summers (2 at East Beach). There several colour ringed Gulls including 1st summer Green N91, Green 3CU7 and Green 3KN9. At East Beach there were unreadable Green and White ringed adults.), 3 Little Egret (at East Beach). Southend Seafront, 06:00 to 08:10: 16 Mediterranean Gull (10 1st summers including 2 new green ringed birds: left N91 and right 3CU7, 1 2nd summer and 5 adults. N91 was ringed as Pullus near Calais on 19/06/03 and relocated to Copt Point, Kent during August 03. Then was Finistere January and February 04 before relocating to Westcliff. 3CU7 ringed as Pullus at Bruxelles 23/06/04 and has not been seen again until today), 7 Little Egret. Steve Arlow (SOG).
Hadleigh, 08:00 to 10:00: 1 Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (calling and showing well in Chapel Lane Car park). Steve Bunn Essex Ranger Service.
Hanningfield Reservoir 10.15 - 12.00: 6 Red-crested Pochard males and 2 females the females had young both families at different ages, 1 Black Swan on the island with the Cormorants, several pairs of Blackcap and 1 weasel. Robin & Tracy Guppy.
Southend Area, 11:00 to 14:50: Mediterranean Gulls counted during a walk along the length of the seafront 17 Mediterranean Gull (10 adults (including a green ringed bird 5AV4 at Rossi's) and 6 1st summers. Note: so far there has been a minimum of 22 birds along the seafront in the past week). Steve Arlow (SOG).
Two Tree Island East 12.00 - 13.00: 1 male Blackcap singing from the top of a dead tree, still lots of Whitethroat. Yasmine Hamid.
Two Tree Island East, 15:30 to 17:00: 1 Hobby (Hawking for 10 mins. + 16 Bee Orchids). Graham Ryland (SOG).
Undercliff Gardens 18.00: 6 Long-tailed Tit on bush near the C2C Railway line. Eric and Patsy Major.
Chigborough Lakes: Long-eared Owl was roosting in a tree on the reserve. Also Little Owl on the road around a third of a mile from the reserve heading away from Maldon. Minor birds also on the reserve included Garden Warbler, Whitethroat, Turtle Dove. Ian Dewsnap.

South Fambridge / Brandy Hole 09.40 - 11.40: 2 Common Tern, 3 Reed Bunting, 3 Shelduck, 2 Sedge Warbler, 7 Swift, 2 Common Whitethroat, Yellow Wagtail, Little Egret, Corn Bunting, Reed Warbler, 14 Skylark at least, they were being blown around by very strong wind. Ray Fuller.
Priory Park, 12:00 to 13:00: 2 Mistle Thrush, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Blackcap (male). John Wright (SOG).
Benfleet Downs 13.00 - 14.00: 2 Cuckoo (at least one was male), also 1 Little Egret near St Marys Church, Benfleet. Yasmine Hamid and Neil Alvey.
Blacktail Spit 13.00: 1 Gannet, all dark 1st yr. Blacktail Spit is the SE corner of the Maplin Sands where the Swin meets the main channel of the Thames. Position of sighting was about OS Ref TR0583. We were in a yacht race at the time heading for the Shivering Sands Towers. Oddly enough the crew thought I ought to be concentrating on my helming! Chris Cook.
Canvey Island 15:00 to 16:00: 4 Green Woodpecker (3 juveniles, 1 female), 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 12 Swift (30+ Scarce Emerald Damselfly + 5 Common Darter on Canvey. Scarce Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Red-eyed Damselfly, Banded Demoiselle, Azure damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Emperor Dragonfly Hairy Dragonfly & Large Red Damselfly in Maldon). Canvey Island, Seafront 10:05 - 10:30: 1 Mediterranean Gull - adult scavenging on beach at Lifeguards. Bird appeared to have injured left leg. 3 Little Egret in tidal pools. (also 1 Oystercatcher; 3 Grey Heron). Ian White.

Hanningfield Reservoir 07.35 - 09.10: 1 Osprey over non-reservoir side of causeway 07.47 - 07.53hrs circled and stooped 3 times, aborting stoops at water surface; 08.08 returned and stooped catching fish about 20cm long; 1 pair Red-crested Pochard on main reservoir close to causeway. Hanningfield Reservoir (causeway) 1620 - 1640: Pair Red-crested Pochard, 2 Common Tern, 1 Osprey showing well out over reservoir then turning to circle over our heads before heading off north. Terry Strong.
