From Mike Bailey. Re: Bottlenose Dolphin

I went out on the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) boat last night to check on the Bottlenose dolphin’s condition – at present things look ok – its lumbar muscle tissue (the area around the dorsal fin – often the first indicator that all is not well) is in ‘good’ condition and the animal was breaching clear of the water on a regular basis (so is obviously ‘happy’ and feeding actively).

We are a little concerned that boat activity at the weekend could jeopardise the animal’s safety, especially if boats do not adhere to the marine code. The Evening Echo contacted BDMLR last night so we estimate that there will be plenty of public interest over the weekend. To help us keep boat traffic to an absolute minimum, we would request that any boat owners who would like to look at the dolphin do NOT take their boat out and ONLY observe the animal from the seawall on Canvey. The law is a little vague in England (primarily because this type of scenario is quite rare!) but in essence any boat that manoeuvres close to the dolphin which may involve following it around and getting too close could be considered by the coastguard and police as harassment and therefore illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act – the dolphin can be seen from land so there is no need to cause it any unnecessary stress.

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue is aware of the dolphin and at the moment BDMLR are not worried by the dolphin’s presence. Lone dolphins live all around the UK coastline. BDMLR are monitoring this particular animal and will only intervene if necessary. The BDMLR are hoping to have a boat in the area to monitor public traffic and ensure the dolphin is left alone.

Bottlenose Dolphin in same place at the mouth of the creek just behind Lobster Smack pub. This animal has been in the same place for at least the last 7 days. 6 Little Egret flew south over the Thames towards Kent, presumably to roost. Web Author, Claire Chambers, Paul Baker, Mike Bailey (SOG). Single individuals like this do, on occasion, end up in harbours and they have been known to get lonely and seek human company. If anyone goes to look at it over the next few days/weeks would you please keep us informed of its health and activity. If it deteriorates, we will need to contact Mike Bailey of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue team (of which Mike is a qualified medic) who will then be able to decide if a rescue attempt is needed. The Rescue Team has been informed of the sighting so should be able to respond quickly should it be necessary. Ed.
