Two Tree Island 12:00 to 15:30
2 Mediterranean Gull, 1 Sandwich Tern, 1 Knot, 1 possible Roseate Tern. This had a bill that was dark red grading into black about half way along its length. The head appeared slightly larger and longer than those of the common terns. Upperparts pale grey, underparts creamy white with a definite flush, rather dirty pink-buff. Also the contrast between upper and lower parts was less clearly defined than in the common terns. Legs very dark red. Tail streamers were noticeably longer than any of the common (although not as long as on the 1st May bird and this had an all black bill.) First seen in flight where its dark bill and general 'jizz' were slightly but noticeably different. It looked completely different to any of the common terns present. Quite mobile around the lagoon, most of the common terns wouldn't tolerate it and chased it away from their immediate vicinity. Eventually it settled at very close range, right in front of the hide. Flew off of the lagoon and out onto Benfleet Creek at 14:45. Andrew Cox.
