East wood Sewage Farm 15.20
Honey Buzzard. Myself and my father are 100% of ID and we have seen the bird many times before although this was our first for Essex. At first we thought it was a large accipiter as the bird was very high but then it circled lower and the size and shape of the bird was unmistakeable. The jizz and strange head shape of the bird was clearly visible and we ruled out common Buzzard by the more pointed wing shape and the fact that the wings were held flat and not in the V of the Common. The fingers of the wings were not spread as is quite often seen with the Common Buzzard. It came down very low over the sewage station before heading NE (maybe to roost in the area?). It was a very dark bird with just a white panel at the base of the wing suggesting a dark phase or possibly juvenile bird? As I say we are positive of ID but couldn't believe how early in the year it was here. Russell Clark.
