North shore between sea walls -eastern section: At least 5 Short-eared Owls hunting over the overgrown set aside and saltmarsh, 35 Avocets flew east down Crouch, Merlin, Sparrowhawk, at least 3 Kestrel, 2 Stonechat, good numbers of Skylark, 3 Rock Pipit. Jeff Delve. (EBS).

Female Lesser Spotted Woodpecker flew from fence to tree stump in neighbouring garden. After about a minute the bird flew off eastwards. First time bird for our garden. Tim Smith.

1 Ring-billed Gull (again showing very well on foreshore), 1 Mediterranean Gull (adult). Steve Arlow (SOG).

Fleet Head, 10:55 to 14:05
1 Black Brant (adult flew over Potton bridge from the Paglesham direction with around 30 Dark-bellied Brent Geese and continued to Foulness), 1 Hen Harrier (superb ringtail hunting on Potton Island),  2 Merlin (1 distantly on Rushley Island and a juvenile/female type sat on gate post in middle of the Fleet ), 64 Black-tailed Godwit, 14 Avocet, 36 Ruff (with the Lapwing flock north of the central path, included a very white headed male), 7 Little Grebe (in the creek), 4 Little Egret,  2 Stonechat (a pair along the road), 1 Starling (an albino/leucistic bird: It was very white with black wings, tail and forehead so looked 'pied'). Paglesham Lagoon, 11:00 to 13:00
1 Black Brant (adult flew in from the west at 11.20, present on the lagoon for 10 minutes before flying off east with 60 Brents), 90 Dark-bellied Brent Goose (about 2/3rds of which were first winters), 3 Goldeneye, 4 Little Egret, 30 Gadwall, 95 Pochard, 7 Little Grebe, 25 Avocet, 3 Reed Bunting. Southend Pier 11:30 - 13:20
3 Common Scoter (2 female, 1 male), many Mediterranean Gull, At least 20 Dunlin on sandbanks, 1 Red-throated Diver, 4 Curlew, 7 Turnstone, 6 Greater Black-backed Gull, 2 Knot. Several Redshank. Phil Lantaff.

East Tilbury 11.30
A first winter/female type Long-tailed Duck observed at East Tilbury on the falling tide. The bird was drifting down river into Mucking Bay and was lost in the murk after about 20 minutes. Three female Common Scoter had just flown up river so no confusion there! A long time since one was in the Inner Thames. David Jobbins.

Southend Pier 11.45 - 13.45
7 Red-throated Diver, 16 Great Crested Grebe, 29 Sanderling, 47 Bar-tailed Godwit, 23 Common Scoter and 11 Mediterranean Gull. These were all seen from the end of the pier, the sanderling and Bar Tails were feeding on a falling tide on sandbanks. Dave Morrison.

Eastwood, Mayflower Close 12.15
2 Little Egret and a Heron being chased off by a crow in the brook behind my garden in Mayflower close. Then the Egrets and the Heron settled in the brook. Could be seen from the bridge at the bottom of Whitehouse Road Eastwood. The Heron visits most days but it was a first for the Egrets. Wendy Meddle.

1 Black Brant (adult still in the area. First seen on river west of Barton Hall creek viewed from the Pillbox at 11.10am. It then paid a 10 minute visit to the Lagoon at 12.50 and was then seen on the fields near Waldens farm to the west of Barton Hall Creek again in the evening. These fields seem to be the Brent flocks current favourite), 1 Yellow-legged Gull (a stunning 1st winter Caspian Gull was seen all to briefly on the the lagoon), 1 Yellow-legged Gull (an adult at the mouth of Barton Hall Creek), 1 Spotted Redshank (on the river), 4 Pintail (a drake and 3 females on the lagoon), 7 Little Egret, 1 Common Scoter (a female on the river near Barton Hall Creek), 65 Avocet, 50 Black-tailed Godwit, 40 Golden Plover, 20 Corn Bunting, 24 Yellowhammer, 18 Reed Bunting (perhaps more in winter crops near Barton Hall Creek), 20 Skylark, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Green Woodpecker, 3 Red-breasted Merganser (2 females and a drake), 17 Golden eye (5 on the lagoon and 12 on the river), 19 Little Grebe (on the river). 1 Little Auk swimming 20 feet out about 400 yards east of the pier (directly in front of the Turtle ride) After 10 minutes it flew towards the pier then returned and settled on the roof of one of the low huts in front of the turtle ride. Stephen Burt & Jon Hunter. (Unconfirmed report - Ed.)

1 Short-eared Owl (hunting over bushes west of the slipway), 2 Golden Plover and 1 Snipe (on the Lagoon), 3 Green Woodpecker (on the eastern side), small flock of Twite with Linnet, Skylark, Pied Wagtail and Meadow Pipit (on the model aircraft field). A very large number of Brent Goose, Wigeon, Dunlin, Oystercatcher and Black-tailed Godwit (of the eastern end of the island with the receding tide).
