'Waldo' the Radio Tagged Common Seal - Update
Observed in River Roach from Lady Essex III
As you will recall, last month we gave you the story behind a radio tagged common seal that we had observed in the River Roach. We have since seen the seal on other Lady Essex river trips and we have a fascinating update on this animal.
From Dr Ruth Sharples, Sea Mammal Research Unit,
It seems that this seal comes to Shelford Creek when it wants more time to haul-out. It's using the banks on Margate Sands to haul-out regularly but then switches and spends more time hauled-out when at Shelford Creek. Below is one of the maps of all the tracks received from this seal. It's unfiltered data at this stage so quite a few locations do end up in land etc. because of the error in satellite locations we receive, they are improved when we filter the data at a later stage. All of the animals we tagged in the Thames don't seem to be traveling far to forage with all of them diving to less than 35 meters.
I Will keep you posted.
