Bird Reports for November 1999

If anyone has seen a Fieldfare or a Redwing this year in the Southend area would they please provide details using the feedback form below.

05/11/99 - Not related to birds but very nice all the same; Four Common Seals were observed this morning at 07.15 off of Westcliff. Park on the sea front opposite to the Cliff's Pavilion as the tide is receeding and watch the sand bank that comes out from Two Tree Island.  

05/11/99 - (from feedback) Wat Tyler Park, Pitsea, 07.30AM .Snipe, Teal, Shoveler, Heron, Gadwall, Wigeon, B/H Gull, L/B/B Gull, 8 Fieldfare, 1 Goldcrest, Lontailed, Great & Blue Tits, Redwing, Kingfisher, Redshank, Curlew, Lapwing, Woodpigeon, Green Finch, Chaffinch. Due to bad light from the main hide these birds were mainly seen from the hides along the back creeks. Observer: R Brown

06/11/99 - Wakering Stairs 11.30, A single Little Owl and, at last, a single Short Eared Owl were both observed in rather unfortunate circumstances - A local shooting club managed to flush both of these birds out. Also observed were Brent Geese, Oystercatcher, Turnstone, Dunlin, Redshank and Red Legged Partridge (x15). Luckily these last birds seemed to be well away from the shooters.

13/11/99 - An early morning walk from Wakering Stairs to the Potton Island bridge produced the following sightings: Snow Bunting ( 1 adult + 3 juveniles), Merlin, Kestrel, Stonechat, Whinchat, Little Egret, Brent Goose, Redshank, Curlew, Common Sandpiper, Meadow Pipit, Red Legged Partridge, Pheasant and Shelduck.

14/11/99 - Canvasback sighted at Abberton. This is the third year that this bird has wintered on Abberton. If you plan a trip to see it be prepared to look at an awful lot of Pochard to find it. Velvet Scoter also reported at the Dam at Abberton

21/11/99 - A days walk taking in Wakering Stairs and Two Tree Island produced the following species: Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Little Owl, Stonechat, Dulin, Knot, Sanderling, Meadow Pipit, Corn Bunting, Linnet, Bar Tailed Godwit, Redshank, Oystercatcher and at least 4 Little Egret. Also, in the last week, a Pilot Whale has been sighted at least twice in mid estuary from Two Tree Island and a Red Stag Deer has been seen at Hadleigh CP.

26/11/99 - A Bittern has been reported at the Lea Valley Country Park. The Forster's Tern is still being sighted in the Tollesbury / Old Hall Marsh area.

 

27/11/99 - Wakering Stairs 10.30am; a male adult Hen Harrier provided astounding views from Haven Point as it hunted the banks along Havengore Creek. Also observed amongst other species were a Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Green Woodpecker, Curlew, Redshank, and two little Egret..

28/11/99 - Two Tree Island 3.53pm. Superb views of a Short Eared Owl hunting along the bank just east of the first car park beyond the bridge..
