Radio Tagged Common Seal
Observed in River Roach from Lady Essex III on Saturday 14th October

We have received the following information

Thanks for getting in touch regarding spotting one of the seals we tagged recently. The transmitter on the seal is a satellite relay data logger, so we can get updates of it's position every 3 hours online and I'd seen that it looked like the seal had gone inland, and that there are channels running through a lot of that peninsular.

We tagged 6 harbour seals on Margate Sands in the Thames on the 12th of October, and this was an adult male. It didnt take long for it to be using another haul out. Margate Sands isn't exposed for much of the tidal cycle and it seems that animals we've tagged there are using a variety of haul-outs in the area and are not as site faithful as we've seen in other areas. For example an animal we tagged there back in March moved from the Thames to haul out in Brittany and The Wash.

Just for your info. the project is funded by DTI to provide information on the at sea distribution of harbour seals in relation to the licencing of oil, gas and renewable energy sites offshore.

If you'd like any more information or have any more sightings do get in touch, obviously we can see approximately where animals have been but it's good to get an idea of the number of other seals using the same haulout etc. to get a feel of the bigger picture.

If a ring was below the knee i.e. on the tarsus rather than the tibia, the colour is given after // so G//W means green above, white below the knee. Other colour codes are R=red, N=black, L=lime green, Y=yellow, X=white ring inscribed with a black X.

Southchurch Park
The Southchurch Cygnets were seen at 10.30am Tuesday off the Gasworks Pier in the estuary. All four of the family were on the pond of Southchurch East from about 3.30pm and the Cygnets were being chased off by mum and dad but stayed paired up as they flew on and off the pond. Mum returned to Southchurch Park at 9am this morning, Dad as thought, is feeding still over at Southchurch East. It looks like their territory is the Southchurch Park and Estuary in the immediate area. The Cygnets have picked this up in the 2 days since leaving the Main Pond at Southchurch Park. Rob Dobinson.
