* You will hear most birdwatchers, when referring to the Great Skua, call it a 'Bonxie'. The Great Skua is to be found mainly breeding in  Scotland with most birds on Shetland, with smaller numbers on the Hebrides, Orkney and a few on the mainland. The term 'Bonxie' is a Shetland word meaning bully and is given to the bird because they eat by chasing other birds and frightening them into dropping or disgorging their food whereupon the Skua will eat it. Our other passage bird, the Arctic Skua, grows up to 18 inches long whereas the Great Skua can grow to a massive 23 inches. Skuas are a regular passage bird in small numbers off our coast during the autumn and late summer.
