Our most important wintering bird is....?
I have just had the figures below sent to me by Chris Tyas of the RSPB as I have been trying to ascertain our most important wintering bird with regards to numbers and total of eastern population. I would have said Oystercatcher, Brent or Godwit. Most surprising are the figures below.
The figures for each species are derived from 5 years of WeBS data. With the qualifying levels for international importance taken from the annual WeBS Report. The Essex total for knot (45,715) represents 13.1% of the East Atlantic flyway population.
Top Ten Wintering Birds
Knot 45,715 - 13.1%
Brent Goose 35,716 - 11.9%
Grey Plover 17,120 - 11.4%
Bar-tailed Godwit 10,209 - 10.2%
Redshank 10,399 - 6.9%
Dunlin 81,404 - 5.8%
Black-tailed Godwit 2,835 - 4.1%
Ringed Plover 1,745 - 3.5%
Shelduck 9,788 - 3.3%
Teal 12,450 - 3.1%
OTHERS: Turnstone, Pintail, Oystercatcher, Curlew, Lapwing, Shoveler, Cormorant, Golden plover & Wigeon.
This information is very important to us if we are lobbying against future disturbance for Wakering, Foulness and even Gunners Park.
Next time you are out and about you can watch the humble Knot in their twisting and turning formations and have some pride in the fact that our part of Essex is so important to them. Let's keep it that way.
