Being a RSPB member and avid birdwatcher/nature enthusiast I just wanted to say how useful and informative I think your website is.Its good to know where to go and which birds are being seen in different places. Having moved around a bit the last couple of years its nice to know I can go onto websites and get an idea of places to visit and to see birds etc. Unfortunately I still haven't been lucky enough to see the Peregrine that frequent Victoria/Baxter Avenue, even though I have gone at various times, but with the abundance of prey ie. pigeons etc I'm sure it won't be long!!!

I came with my family today to Wat Tyler. We were taken on a guided walk by Richard. It was excellent and my son Alex really enjoyed it. It was great to have someone so knowledgeable and enthusiastic (and patient!) show us around. A great education for both Alex and me. Thanks

We have just moved to Hornchurch and have seen an unusual bird in our garden and would like information on what it is. The bird is not as large as a pigeon but not far off. Its body is a salmon colour and the tips of its wings are black, white and blue. It has white on top of its head and white under the chin and black on its cheeks. This bird comes down andn picks up peanuts which are still in the shell and we have seen blackbirds chasing it!! Can you help? Answer given - Ed.

I don't think I've got all the way through it but have found it valuable for the sightings as I thought I'd got some kind of albino blackbird in my garden and when I looked at sightings I realised I'd seen a Ring Ouzel as he had been sighted in the area I live so it was great to identify him properly. I'm new to all this identifying but its great and the website helps to know things and where the birds are and the photo's people do too are great.

Very good, in fact, really good. Just to let you know where town sparrows go in winter; We live a short walking distance from Romford town centre and new flats are going up all round us. On Wednesday 22nd Feb a sparrowhawk visited our 40 by 50 foot garden and dined off an unknown number of sparrows. Three were seen to be eaten. She stayed for an hour and a quarter. Good photographs taken at scene of sparrow genocide! Seed box now hardly touched since visitation.

Informally informative. I am a dipper and enjoyed hopping from article to article and turning it over. I was especially attracted by the bright, shiny objects on the picture pages. I can often be seen by the computer, digging around, trying to find items I tucked away hoping to revisit them later and occasionally recovering them. Fairly gregarious and friendly, I share what I find with others of my species.

Fantastic, we will be re-joining the rspb at xmas. our 13 year old son is very very interested and has made our garden a haven for birds. this morning at 7.45am we were visited by what we thought was either a hobby, merlin or peregrine falcon. I have just looked at the recent sightings page and a peregrine falcon was spotted at wat tyler country park yesterday. this is about a mile from our house. so it was probably that. fantastic.

Fantastic, really enjoy coming on here, today I have had a chance to browse through it more thoroughly than I have in recent times and got to the stories regarding how you and your son took up the wonderful hobby (sorry addiction!) that is birding, parts of it had me in stitches but all of it I can understand. I have been birdwatching since I was 4, although sporadically until about 6-7 years ago, I now go once a week or more if I get the chance. I am 31 years of age and have always gone birdwatching on my own as i have never known anyone to go with, sometimes it can be lonely but that is always made better once I get my first glimpse of a bird. Thanking you for this wonderful website.

Very impressed with the site, excellent layout, and also impressed how much time/work you must put in to keep it so up to date. I am an Essex man who now lives in Sussex, and has done for many years but I still occasionally come over to visit family and do a bit of birding. Having been over after xmas to see family and also the Shoebury Snow Buntings there was some discussion/disagreement within our group over ageing and sexing the 4 birds after our viewing, I had noted there was some excellent photos of the very birds taken at end of December 2004 on your website which would confirm what we had seen, but on January 1st when I visited the site to view them I found they were no longer available. Is it possible to retain some pictures of 2004 at least of recent birds, perhaps keeping a rolling 12 monthly window of birds, I know they take up a lot of space, so you cannot keep them all indefinitely.

Bob is quite correct - due to limited space I cannot keep our photographs for more than a year. However, the Southend Ornithological Group has all of Steve Arlow's photographs from past years. Ed.

I only came across your site quite late at night and haven't the time right now to read it properly but from what I've seen it is very good, also nice and clear to read. I was trying to find out what has happened to all the birds in our area we feed them all year, seed and nuts in winter, and just bread in a dish with water to moisten it in the summer, but we have noticed in the last few days that there are none about and they haven't been to feed, we don't even see them flying about at all.

I have always had an interest in watching birds but have never been able to devote much time at it. Your incredibly informative website has given me new enthusiasm for this pleasurable past time. The picture section particularly helps a very amateur bird watcher see, not only the beauty of the birds, but how the differences in very similar types of birds can identify the "true" type. I was not aware there were so many places to see so many different types of birds in the Southend areas.

Just a letter of thanks for you article on Mull on the web-site which impressed me so much that I at once bought two tickets on Ryan Air at ?29.20 total price and went to see for myself. What an Island, I thought the Scillies were paradise, but I've now also fallen in love with Mull. Without even trying our bird count was 80 species, the highlights of course being Golden Eagles everywhere, White tailed Eagles, Corncrakes and a Leucistic Willow Warbler who somehow survived with Buzzards soaring way above. My wife's highlight was a late evening, hour long drive from Iona passing only three cars, we watched Otters playing in the Seaweed and slowly passed deer in bright sunlight at 10.20.If any one is thinking of going the Treshnish islands must not be missed with a landing on Lunga where we sat and had lunch with puffins within touching distance and in view of a cliff containing evidently 24000 nesting seabirds including 10500 Razorbill and Guillemot.

Thank you for your very informative and up to date site, which finally gave me the inspiration to go to Wakering Stairs and take the walk around the creek to the far side of the 'Old Tip' on Saturday. My father and I have not been bird watching together for some years, but I have recently had my passion reignited by meeting a few local enthusiasts out walking. We started out at approx. 10.30am when the tide was starting to go out, with the 'mill pond' like sea housing large numbers of Brent Geese and very large flocks of Godwit, Knot and Oystercatcher. Down in the creek we saw at least 40 Little Egrets during our walk, 2 Little Stints, 3 humans stranded in the creek in their boats (waders), 2 Grey Plover, a flock of Golden Plover and a Harrier (probably female Marsh) briefly appearing above the sea wall on Rushley Island, all with the help of a very friendly local enthusiast. However, the real excitement of the day happened for us on our walk back. At 3.40pm I had a final look up to Rushley Island to see a Short Eared Owl. As I looked through my binoculars, 2 female Hen Harriers came into view disturbing the Short Eared Owls (3 in total). Then through the light mist, in the same view, came a ghostly Barn Owl. The site was truly magnificent. Time/light sadly was against us and we couldn't stay looking for long. However, one glance back north to the island and we spotted a female Merlin on the barn roof and a male Kestrel on the Wakering side of the creek. As we then came back under the road bridge we disturbed a male Peregrine that flew out from the sea wall beneath us. A truly 'rapturous' day, possibly my finest birding experiences. If I return, will/could it get any better? Maybe a male Hen Harrier and more daylight? I thank you again for the location details provided on your site and I will continue to look at your site daily and support anything that I can provide. Many thanks.

Fantastic Website! Congratulations! All we had at Benfleet in my boyhood days was the RSPB Junior Bird Recorders Club, but now you have everything, except breeding Redback Shrikes (they used to be on every available scrubby field), and there were a pair of Wrynecks filmed by the local schoolmaster on the Rabbit Warren near the Benfleet Watertower. Anyway, I'm retiring back to Essex next March (Spring migration), and look forward to the Birds, and joining the local club, after 20 years here in Jeddah.

I think the web site is very, very good, particularly the info on latest sightings. As a result of it I saw a White-spotted Bluethroat for the 1st time yesterday, the one in Gunners Park, Shoeburyness. I'm finding the Ring-billed Gull reported in the Rossi's area of Westcliff seafront elusive. I've searched for it there about half a dozen times without success. I presume that it is seen at times of high tide. Is that correct??

I have been visiting your excellent website since obtaining access to the internet. Although I am a very inexperienced bird watcher I thought you might be interested to hear that a kingfisher can regularly be seen along Prittle Brook, Rochford most mornings at approximately 6:30 - 7 am. I see it between Sutton Road following the course of the brook towards Temple Farm Industrial Estate. By the way the River Roach can also be quite a good place to see sea birds in winter, particularly between Stambridge Mill and the Wardens. It is also a quiet place to walk. Once again many thanks for your excellent website.

I'm wondering if your group has a listserve like UK Birdnet to which I might post a message? During the months of May and part of June we had two nest boxes occupied since the youngsters have left the nests. We have not seen anymore which is unusual! As they always have a second lot of eggs! But there are no bird calls of any description that can be heard its as though all the birds have disappeared Sparrow Starling Blackbird even the Magpie the only bird at this moment in time to be seen is a Robin and the odd Seagull I'm quite concerned about this! You could always hear the birds early morning and just prior to sunset now its just silent! What could be the cause of this!
