Uncle Tom's Cabin - Southend Seafront

Uncle Tom's Cabin is the name of a Caf situated within a playing green at the eastern end of Southend seafront just past Maplin way. The area is surrounded by greens on both sides of the road and is always a very good spot to find gulls at high tide. The nearby coastguard station and the enclosed sea wall is particularly favoured by hundreds of Dunlin also at high tide.

The greens and the coastguard station are both opposite the Shorehouse public house, Thorpe Bay.

A resident Ring Billed Gull was joined by an Iceland Gull at this spot in January 2000. We also have reports of four Sabine's Gulls being seen here. The gulls that tend to roost here at high tide make this a good place to see gulls in this part of Southend.
