Oxenham Farm and Wakering Common

Oxenham Farm road
The start of our walk with Oxenham Farm in the distance

A wonderful unspoilt area that offers a circular walk of approximately one mile. The walk is best taken anti-clockwise which will then place the sun behind you for most of the way. The walk offers views of estuary and common land and is particularly good in the Summer months. The farms that you will encounter on this walk all very bird aware and you will encounter nest boxes on various parts of the walk. Oxenham Farm is a wonderful place for Finches and Buntings as you will often see quite sizeable flocks in search of stray grain around the farm buildings. Half way through the walk you will reach the site of the old Wakering land-fill area (now disused), the views of the surrounding countryside and estuary from the top of the mounds is quiet astounding.

Directions

From the main Southend road the A127 follow signs for Great Wakering Village. Proceed down the B1017 until you get to Wakering Church at the end of the high street. At the mini roundabout turn right and then immediate left down New Road. Just before the M.O.D security gate there is an unmade road on the left and this is a good place to leave your car. From this unmade road follow the private paved road to Oxenham Farm and from there join the sea wall.
