We were watching the female Marsh Harrier gliding low over the banks of New England Island from on top of the old Wakering tip when a large white bird flew up. I took this in the first instance to be Mute Swan but as I got the telescope on it it became immediately apparent that the neck was shorter and had a slight downward kink. Following the bird as it flew to the north, we could detect a slight darker colour to the edge of the extreme primaries. Also obvious were the feet that projected out much further than Little Egret and also downwards. The bird flew with extended neck and much slower wing beats than Little Egret. We are both happy that this was, indeed, a juvenile Spoonbill.
