Two Tree Island 15:50 - 16:40: Sitting on the slope below Belton Way East at Leigh-on-Sea, I clearly counted several times no less than at least 38 Little Egrets on the saltings east from the eastern end of Two Tree Island and 40 more on the saltings south of the eastern end of the Island, ie. at least 78 Little Egrets in total. Leigh-on-Sea, Tattersall Gardens 19.10: (my back garden) juvenile male Sparrowhawk in low swooping ambush attack from north took prey it pursued inside 8ft tall shrub, landed on flower bed with prey in foot, stood for about 1 minute with its back to me and then flew off south with prey in foot. South Fambridge / Brandy Hole 10.05 - 12.10: 3 Sedge Warbler, Common Tern, 25 Dunlin, Turtle Dove, Common Whitethroat, Yellow Wagtail, 6 Little Egret, 5 Shelduck, 22 Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Greenshank, 18 Common Sandpiper. Ray Fuller.
The Fleet - Wakering 15:38 to 17:30: 16 Little Egret, 7 Grey Heron, 24 Shelduck (4 adults 20 juveniles), 1 female Marsh Harrier, 2 Sparrowhawk, 9 Kestrel (one strange bird with an almost all white head), 78 Whimbrel, 3 Greenshank, 1 Wood Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, 3 Common Tern, 6 Swift, 3 Green Woodpecker, c.30 Sand Martin, 53 Swallow (many juveniles), 9 House Martin, 8 Yellow Wagtail (including juveniles), 1 Wheatear, 19 Goldfinch. Southend, 10:00 to 14:00: 1 Sparrowhawk (Over Sainsbury's), 8 Herring Gull (2 pairs have raised 2 chicks each to almost the flying stage. But given the number of adult Herring Gulls around the town this spring/summer it is almost certain other pairs have nested on the roofs unobserved ). John Wright (SOG).
